Ohio's Shipwreck History

Ohio once saw thousands of ships pass through its waters, but many were wrecked and forgotten. Learn about several of these ships, their stories, and what they teach. Registration required.

From Lake Erie, to the Ohio and Erie canals, to countless rivers, Ohio's maritime history is rich and historic. This presentation highlights the stories of several shipwrecks; their ‘lives’, their ‘deaths’, and their discoveries. How many shipwrecks do we even have in Ohio? Come and find out! 

Speaker Linda Pansing is a former Curator of Archaeology for the Ohio History Connection.  She received her degrees from The Ohio State University and did her underwater field work with Florida State University. Linda is also a scuba instructor and has been actively diving since 1988.  She has conducted field research and/or has been project manager for surveys of terrestrial and underwater sites that date from the Late Pleistocene to the 20th century.  She is a member of numerous Ohio scuba clubs and is a co-founder of the Maritime Archaeological Survey Team (MAST), a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to the documentation, scientific study and education pertaining to underwater archaeological resources.
