School-age children will learn to be safe online citizens, presented with materials from Highlights + Google's Be Internet Awesome program. Grades 2-6. Supplies provided. Registration required.

The Internet can be an awesome source for fun and information, but part of being a responsible Internet user is knowing how to look out for Internet dangers and keep oneself safe. Internet Awesome was developed by Google and Highlights Magazine in partnership with educators, researchers, and online‑safety experts at The Net Safety Collaborative and iKeepSafe.org. Over the course of two days, we will cover the five pillars of The Internet Code of Awesome: Smart, Alert, Strong, Kind, and Brave. These lessons align with the International Society for Technology in Education standards.

By registering for this event, you are RSVPing for both dates, June 24th and June 25th, from 3:30-5:00 p.m. each day. Attendees are strongly encouraged to attend both sessions, as they cover different topics.

Our goal is for every child to leave the program prepared to...

• Think critically and evaluate apps, websites, and other digital content.
• Protect themselves from online threats, including bullying and scams.
• Get smart about sharing: what, when, how, and with whom.
• Be kind and respectful toward other people online, including respecting their privacy.
• Ask for help with tricky situations from a caregiver or other trusted adult.

Every participant will also leave the program with a few Internet Awesome goodies to help support their learning, including stickers, a bracelet, and a special edition of Highlights Magazine.

The content presented is most educationally appropriate for grades 2-6. Caregivers and family members are encouraged to attend the program alongside their child to help support their learning. Please register any children who will be participating in the program. Registration is not required for caregivers or non-participating children.

This program will also be available at:

  • Orange Branch Library on June 24 and June 25
  • Delaware Library on July 28 and July 29
